Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH, thyrotrophin)

TSH secretion starts just before sleep onset, peaks at the onset of sleep and then falls during NREM sleep so that the daytime values are reached by the time of awakening in the morning. Secretion is controlled approximately equally by circadian rhythms and by the state of being asleep, which inhibits its secretion.

Hormones which have a primary anabolic function have a different pattern of secretion, which is predominantly controlled according to the sleep–wake state.
